Who do you work for? Referral Systems Online
-
What does your job involve? Designing and developing web applications, and drinking lots of coffee. Currently we’re implementing the second phase of an application that handles online business referrals in the financial services industry.
-
What do you like most about your job? I’ve always wanted to be a programmer so this job is right up my alley. I enjoy writing computer software to make people’s lives easier.
-
What are the perks of your job? Flexible hours, good pay, fast internet link, working from home, and interacting with a team of professionals.
-
What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job? I love travelling, so I guess my business trip to Colombia & the USA for a couple of weeks last year would probably have to top the list.
-
What inspired you to choose a career in this area? My Dad - he got me into computers at a very young age, and ever since I wrote my first program I was hooked.
-
How did you get to where you are now? By taking the right opportunities when they arose, and keeping in touch with the latest technology trends.
-
Who or what has been an inspiration to you? My Dad, who is also a software engineer, friends and family who have always been supportive, and workmates that are not only good at what they do, but enjoy their work as well.
-
What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Always be on the lookout for new opportunities.
-
What training/qualifications do you have/need? I’ve got a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. You don’t need a uni degree to get into IT, but it makes you far more employable if you have one.
-
What subjects did you study at school? Maths I & II (B & C these days), Physics, Chemistry, English, and IPT (Information Processing & Technology).
-
What are your career goals/plans for the future? For the moment, I want to stay in a technical role – I have no interest in managing people. I’d love to work over in England or the USA in the medium term. Long term I guess I’d love to own a software development company.
-
What career opportunities are there for people in your field? Lots! The IT industry is so varied that there’s a place for almost anyone. If you apply yourself and you’re good at what you do, then you can really go far.
-
What is the average starting salary for a graduate? $35-45K
