    Annette
  Scientist (Histology)

  • Who do you work for?

    Queensland Medical Laboratory (QML)

  • What does your job involve?

My job involves the preparation of tissue specimens so that pathologists can examine them under the microscope.

When specimens arrive they are allocated a number. They are cut into very thin sections, placed on slides and stained. Different stains are used in order to highlight different structures within the tissue.

  • What do you like most about your job?

I get to work with some great people and see interesting disease processes. I also don't have to dress up to much for work.

  • What are the perks of your job?

Higher level staff sometimes attend conferences interstate and overseas, however at my level there are not any obvious perks, unless you count free pathology tests!

  • What inspired you to choose a career in this area?

I have always had an interest in anatomy and physiology.

  • How did you get to where you are now?

I went to university at QUT where I did a Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Science). Throughout university I worked at Queensland Medical Laboratory and I also did a vacation scholarship program at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research over the holidays. My industry placement was at the John Tonge Centre. After university I applied for my current position at Queensland Medical Laboratory and have been working there since.

  • Who or what has been an inspiration to you?

    My friends and family.

  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

“If A equals success, then the formula is: A = X + Y + Z. X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut.” Einstein.

  • What training/qualifications do you have/need?

To be a Scientist you generally need a degree in Medical Science or an equivalent Science degree. However, some people work their way up to a position through experience, but this is increasingly rare.

  • What subjects did you study at school?

Ancient History, Biology, Chemistry, English, Graphics, Maths B and Religion. Also I studied senior Physics externally during second year.

  • What career opportunities are there for people in your field?

Opportunities may arise to progress from my current position, however the staff structure is fairly set where I currently work. My course also provided me with a good foundation if I decide to go on and study Medicine.

  • What is the average starting salary for a graduate?

    $35-45K
