  • Who do you work for?

    Centre for Molecular Biotechnology, Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

  • What does your job involve?

    Research for the BioRegenerative Therapies Program – the research program at QUT that looks at developing therapies for the treatment of damaged tissues. My project involves research of VitroGro™, a unique hormone that enhances cell reproduction and movement in a range of cell types.

  • What do you like most about your job?

    The discovery of new things.

  • What are the perks of your job?

    Travel, meeting interesting people, ‘flexible hours’ and national and international recognition.

  • What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job?

    Going on the QUT Innovation train to central QLD and attending national and international conferences.

  • What inspired you to choose a career in this area?

    I always liked science at school (had a great Biology teacher) and wanted to do it at uni. It all fell into place.

  • How did you get to where you are now?

    I started an Associate Diploma of Clinical Techniques, then went to UQ to start Bachelor of Science / Bachelor of Arts (Japanese) but after two years I switched to Bachelor of Applied Science at QUT majoring in Biochemistry/Microbiology, completing it with Honours in Biochemistry (Crayfish Digestive Enzymology). I then worked for a year in the Paediatric Respiratory Research Centre at the Mater Hospital looking at fluids in the body that assist organs to function properly before coming back to QUT to start my PhD in Life Sciences.

  • Who or what has been an inspiration to you?

    Doing something that I enjoy and being comfortable in my everyday work environment. Also contributing to improving knowledge in medical research for clinical applications.

  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

    Surround yourself with positive people.

  • What training/qualifications do you have/need?

    AD Clinical Techniques, Queensland University of Technology
    Bachelor of Science, first year, University of Queensland
    Bachelor of Applied Science, second and third year and Honours, Queensland University of Technology.

  • What subjects did you study at school?

    Chemistry, Biology, English, Maths I, Japanese and Study of Religion.

  • What are your career goals/plans for the future?

    To obtain an international post-doctoral fellowship (research project) and follow a career path leading to involvement in clinical trials.

  • What career opportunities are there for people in your field?

    Research in a post-doctoral position within private laboratories, research within universities or hospitals, lecturing at a university or sales representative / product consultant for a biotechnology company or pharmaceutical company.

  • What is the average starting salary for a graduate?

    $45-55K For a PhD graduate, the standard salary is around $47K.
