  • Who do you work for?

I work as a contract design consultant for a consultancy called CMD.

  • What does your job involve?

I get to be creative with new technologies to design, develop and manufacture systems and products. Products designed by my consultancy range from mobile phones, medical equipment, mining control and communication systems, hairdryers, automobiles, toothbrushes, agricultural equipment to sunglasses.

  • What do you like most about your job?

Solving problems, developing new and creative ideas, taking an idea that started in your head or as a sketch on paper and then developing it to an actual real-life product that people can use and appreciate.

  • What are the perks of your job?

Concept generation and idea creation stages of product development. I basically get paid to be creative and sketch!

  • What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job?

Definitely the best part of my job is receiving the first trial product or sample of a product that you have developed. Holding or using something in real-life that you have developed from mind is a total thrill.

  • What inspired you to choose a career in this area?

I am a naturally creative and innovative person and during year 10 my graphics teacher was aware of my talents in Industrial Design. He suggested that I explore it as a career.

  • How did you get to where you are now?

I gained my current position directly from uni. I worked very hard to be at the top of my year and to be good at what I do, as a result people in the industry took notice and offered me a job.

  • Who or what has been an inspiration to you?

Leonardo Da Vinci, Salvadore Dali, the early pioneering industrial designers – Henry Dryfuss, Raymond Lowey and also my senior designers at work who are also my mentors.

  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Make sure that whatever you do for study or a career, you enjoy it!

  • What training/qualifications do you have/need?

I have completed a Bachelor of Built Environment majoring in Industrial Design ( three years) at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Brisbane. After this I completed a Graduate Diploma of Industrial Design (one year) at QUT.

  • What subjects did you study at school?

At school I was fortunate to find out that I wanted to do Industrial Design in year 10. As a result I tailored my year 11 and 12 subjects to Industrial Design. Subjects conducted were Maths B, English, Physics, Technology Studies, Graphics and Art. At the very least, Graphics or Art will help you through university as the ability to draw and communicate visually is important in Industrial Design.

  • What are your career goals/plans for the future?

I wish to gain experience in Australia as a design consultant for a few more years and then travel to Europe and America in search of international work experience.

  • What career opportunities are there for people in your field?

In Australia, work positions and opportunities are growing. In the past, Australia has not had strong manufacturing and development industries. However, Australia is receiving more credibility and respect on the world market as a technology R&D and manufacturing location. Traditionally, strong industrial design industries, and hence increased opportunities, lie in Europe, America and Asia.

  • What is the average starting salary for a graduate?

    $25-45K
