Who do you work for? Santos Asia Pacific
-
What does your job involve? The main goal is to find and develop commercial oil and gas reserves. I work with the Indonesian exploration team, but I also do a lot of work for the new ventures team.
Geophysicists generally use earthquake data to study the earth’s sub-surface in search of natural hydrocarbon stocks. We work with geologists and engineers to develop prospects and plan wells that hopefully lead to oil and gas discoveries. The new ventures team evaluates and purchases assets held by another company or prepares bids for exploration projects required by the Indonesian Government.
-
What do you like most about your job? I learn and build my expertise every week. I enjoy working as part of a team and generating ideas that may lead to the discovery of an oil or gas field. The office where I work is relatively small and we have a great bunch of people here who are always willing to answer my questions and suggest ways that I can improve my work.
-
What are the perks of your job? Having spoken to other graduates in the industry who now work in Adelaide or Perth, I think having my own office is a big perk. There’s always the prospect of traveling interstate or overseas to attend training courses or to gain field experience.
-
What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job? The last time I went to Adelaide for work, the Queen was in town, Bill Clinton was opening the World IT Conference, the Adelaide Fringe Festival was on and our course was held at the Adelaide Oval when the cricket was on.
-
What inspired you to choose a career in this area? I enjoyed my Earth Science and Maths subjects at high school and I thought Physics wasn’t that bad either. I decided that if I could combine these three subjects then I’d go a long way to enjoying my future career.
-
How did you get to where you are now? By chance I hooked up some work experience at the end of year 12 with Digicon Geophysical (now Veritas DGC), and during my four years at university I worked as a geo-technical assistant at Origin Energy.
-
Who or what has been an inspiration to you? My mentor who has worked all round the world and still gets enjoyment from his job after 25 years in the industry.
-
What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Think outside of the box. In the age of computers and the Internet there is so much data available that it is impossible to learn all this information. The most important thing is how you use this data to generate new ideas.
-
What training/qualifications do you have/need? Bachelor of Applied Science (Geophysics) with Honours, University of Queensland.
-
What subjects did you study at school? English, Maths B, Physics, Earth Science, Graphics and French.
-
What career opportunities are there for people in your field? There is definitely the opportunity to work your way up the corporate ladder and enter the management world. As an explorationist, there is a broad scope for travel and to work overseas.
-
What is the average starting salary for a graduate? Outside of major city centres, this figure increases quite a lot. $35-45K
