    Greg
  Project Engineer (Aviation)

  • Who do you work for?

    Hawker Pacific, Townsville

  • What does your job involve?

Hawker Pacific is a company that does aviation mechanics and maintenance of aircraft. The aircraft range from light piston aircraft to corporate jets, airliners, helicopters and military transport. I draft proposals and updates, monitor and report work progress on a daily and weekly basis and do the same for entire projects. I provide IT support for the Townsville facility, deal with customers and use computer packages to provide real time progress reports.

  • What do you like most about your job?

Apart from the good money, I enjoy the fact that I am able to work on my own - I am given certain duties and do not have people constantly monitoring me. I am free to go about or organise my schedule as I see fit.

  • What are the perks of your job?

I like being in an air-conditioned office while most other workers in the facility may be working in extreme heat.

  • What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job?

Once I tried to remove a possum that had managed to find its way into the inside of the aircraft.

  • What inspired you to choose a career in this area?

I have always had an interest in aviation and wanted to do some form of engineering. Both my sister and brother in law are pilots and my family owned a helicopter for a while, so that probably increased my interest. I chose aerospace avionics because it was aviation based, but also because avionics is the cutting edge in this industry. It is where I believe the most emphasis will be in the future.

  • How did you get to where you are now?

I went to boarding school in Townsville and completed a year of Electrical Engineering at James Cook University in Townsville the following year. After getting high enough grades I transferred to Aerospace Engineering in Brisbane at the Queensland University of Technology. After finishing uni I did six weeks of industrial employment with a company in Brisbane before moving to Townsville for my current position.

  • Who or what has been an inspiration to you?

Not one person in particular has been an inspiration, but anyone who has had to work hard or battle to achieve what they set out to do.

  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Try to always be honest and loyal and always try your best.

  • What training/qualifications do you have/need?

A Bachelor Degree in Aerospace Avionics Engineering, from the Queensland University of Technology.

  • What subjects did you study at school?

English, Mathematics B, Chemistry, Physics, Technology Studies and Information Processing and Technology.

  • What are your career goals/plans for the future?

I hope to secure a technology based role with a stable, well-respected and possibly international company where I can use my particular interests in my work. I would like to progress to a high position in such a company and possibly work overseas in the future.

  • What career opportunities are there for people in your field?

Most career opportunities lie with larger companies such as Boeing, McDonnell Douglas and Airbus, but also with the defence forces both nationally and internationally.

  • What is the average starting salary for a graduate?

    $35-45K
