  • Who do you work for?

Professor Lyn Griffiths, Genomics Research Centre, School of Health Science, Griffith University Gold Coast Campus.

  • What does your job involve?

Breast cancer research. I do lab work where I study breast cancer cells and look at which genes are active in the cells and the changes the cells go through with the disease. I also prepare cells for analysis and keep up to date with current breast cancer research.

  • What do you like most about your job?

Knowing that the research I do is relevant on a large scale and that my findings will provide knowledge into the complex issues like the behaviour of breast cancer, the possible tendencies of people to develop breast cancer and the signs of the start of breast cancer.

  • What are the perks of your job?

Working in a great lab with interesting people and being able to research complex diseases.

  • What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job?

In the Genomics Research Centre it’s fun to find an interesting or unexpected result. In the histology laboratory, the most interesting part of the work experience was observing and assisting the doctors in cutting removed tissues like appendices.

  • What inspired you to choose a career in this area?

I particularly wanted to be involved in researching cancer, the tendencies of people to develop cancer and the signs of the start of the disease, its nature and progression. Biotechnology and genetic research is a fast growing industry that will have an impact on the medical industry in the prevention, treatment and the biological understanding of disease and other related conditions.

  • How did you get to where you are now?

I volunteered and requested to do work experience in a pathology laboratory. I also attended a biotechnology conference where I networked and was invited to visit the lab I currently work in, where I have completed work experience, a vacation scholarship and a third year research project.

  • Who or what has been an inspiration to you?

    My friends and work colleagues.

  • What’s the best advice you’ve been given?

Get work experience, it’s the most valuable source of information. You’ll find out what is involved in the area, but more importantly, you’ll discover whether or not you are suited to doing it.

  • What training/qualifications do you have/need?

I have completed a Bachelor of Biotechnology at the Nathan campus of Griffith University.

  • What subjects did you study at school?

Math B, Chemistry, Biology, English, Drama and Physics.

  • What are your career goals/plans for the future?

To complete my Masters, then upgrade to a PhD and continue my research in the area of breast cancer.

  • What career opportunities are there for people in your field?

Research positions in a variety of extended fields relevant to medical research, as well as related opportunities in education, business, marketing and law.

  • What is the average starting salary for a graduate?

This can vary greatly depending on the area of research entered into and the particular job undertaken.
    $35-45K
