Who do you work for? An ecological consulting company called FRC Environmental.

What does your job involve? Field work: aquatic flora and fauna surveys (diving and boating), sediment and water quality sampling. Laboratory work: species identification, sample preparation Data analysis: statistics and comparison with guidelines, interpretation of results, report writing

What do you like most about your job? I love getting out into the field. It’s also great to see a project from beginning to end and be involved at all levels.

What are the perks of your job? Going boating and fishing ... for work! I also get to go to some really nice places, like Airlie Beach.

What is the most unusual or fun thing you’ve done in your job? Once I was doing some invertebrate sampling in a river and there was a flash flood. I got stranded on the wrong side of the river!

What inspired you to choose a career in this area? I’ve always loved the outdoors and had an interest in plants and animals.

How did you get to where you are now? I got a scholarship with a research organisation at Griffith University. I had just finished the project when my current job was advertised. The rest is history!

Who or what has been an inspiration to you? The friends I made while at university were my biggest inspiration. We had a lot of fun and helped each other out a lot. Its great now to see the different paths everyone has taken!

What’s the best advice you’ve been given? Don’t take no for an answer (if its something you are passionate about!)

What training/qualifications do you have/need? I did a Bachelor of Science (Australian Environmental Studies) at Griffith University. There are other similar Environmental Science / Ecology / Biology courses that would provide similar qualifications.

What subjects did you study at school? Biology, Marine Studies, English, Maths B, Japanese, Ancient History.

What are your career goals/plans for the future? I’d love to work overseas - in a marine biology research centre in Canada.

What career opportunities are there for people in your field? There are heaps! I have friends working for AusAid in Samoa and Vietnam. There are also lots of opportunities for work in research centres and museums, with National Parks, Environmental Protection Agency and heaps more!
